Ryosenji Temple

Yousenji is a Nichiren sect's temple established by the governer of Shimoda, Nagamasa Imamura, in 1635. This temple is one of the government-designated ruins. After the Shimoda port was opened due to the Treaty of Peace and Amity between US and Japan (1854), Ryousenji became a negotiation place for Commodore Perry and the minister plenipotentiary of Japan, and contributed to the Shimoda Treaty. The garden has about 1,000 shrubs of Yesterday-Today-and-Tomorrow that diffuse strong fragrance. They fully bloom in May and stay beautiful until October. The temple has a treasure house with the largest collection from the black ships and Commondore Perry, with more than a thousand of original articles exhibited in the theme of international relationships.
